MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

MRI is a non-invasive imaging method that uses radio waves and powerful magnets to create remarkably clear pictures of your body’s internal structures without radiation.

What to expect with MRI

The MRI unit is a large, cylinder-shaped tube surrounded by a strong magnet. During an MRI, you will lie on a table that automatically slides you to the center of the tube. In some cases, a dye (contrast material) may be injected into your bloodstream to show images more clearly. The procedure can be noisy, and headphones or earplugs may be provided for your comfort. Metal and electronic objects are not allowed in the room because they can interfere with the magnetic field of the MRI. Expect the procedure to take about one hour.

You have MRI choices

For your comfort, SCL Health offers several types of MRI machines:

  • Closed-bore - Offers the highest clarity, but may make some people feel claustrophobic.
  • Wide-bore - Available in some SCL Health locations, wide-bore units offer a bit more room for large or claustrophobic patients.

Common uses for MRI

MRI is a valuable tool in early detection and identification of several conditions, including:

  • Cancer and heart and vascular disease - An MRI image shows differences in water content, so it’s especially useful in detecting tumors, infection and inflammation, conditions which increase fluid in body tissue.
  • Spinal and brain related issues - MRI provides clear images through bone and is often used to assess spinal cord and brain injuries.
  • Muscular and bone injuries - Your doctor may order an MRI to examine your bones and possible ligament and tendon injuries.
  • Women’s health issues - MRI may also be used to diagnose health issues like breast disease.
